Why does the first line matter?
The first line of a caption determines whether followers tap “more”. Fitting the main message, question or call to action into those first 125 characters increases engagement. Putting hashtags at the end of the caption or in the first comment keeps the first line clean.
Emojis and special characters
The counter counts every emoji and fancy letter as one character, as it appears on screen, and warns you as you approach the limit. Since Instagram may count some combined emojis (family, skin tone, flags) as two or more characters, leave a few characters of margin if you're very close to the limit.
